"LIVERPOOL - a Socialist council", said the signs that were once tacked to the sides of city public buildings or hung from the fences surrounding the recreation grounds.
It's not a word you hear often in mainstream politics any more and it is hardly ever heard in the council chamber these days.
But for Tony Mulhearn, one of the leading figures of the Labour council that ran this city between 1983 and 1987, when Liverpool's profile was as high as it was at the height of Beatlemania, socialism was at the root and core of everything the authority did.
